If the title of this post brought you here thinking you would hear about the time I drank SoCo in Southern California, sadly, you would be mistaken. Not that I don’t love a good drunken story, but this is not it! Instead, this is about how a small town girl, living in a lonely world, hopped a midnight train going anywhere! HA! Sorry! I couldn’t resist. The lyrics to this song aren’t entirely inaccurate. Just swap the small town for Dallas, TX. Swap the lonely world part because she’s married and has a beautiful family. Change midnight train to a high flying plane and swap anywhere for Los Angeles. See, it’s not too different! Anyways, back on track! This is about how a young woman turned a joyful hobby into a booming business. With a little encouragement from family and friends, she was able to establish a little bit of SoCo in SoCal. Thus, Comfort Cookies was born!
A Little Back Story
Ok, So I must confess! The owner of this wonderful company is actually a friend of mine! In our humble beginnings in Dallas, TX, we were just a couple of hatchling vocal majors at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. We all just called it Arts Magnet. Looking at the long name, I’m hoping you could see why.
Enter Jeniffer
I met Jeniffer my junior year. She was an incoming freshman and had an amazing voice. I’ll never forget that day. It was the tradition in the vocal department that every summer, before the start of the new school year, we would have what was called ‘Freshman Day Camp.’ It was an opportunity for the incoming freshman to meet their upper classmen and hopefully feel more comfortable before starting school. We actually met a few days before the camp. I was at the school helping to prep and in walks Jeniffer and her mom!
Jeniffer seemed a bit shy at first! I don’t blame her! Being bombarded by a lot of faces AND the expectation to come into a new environment and have show stopping talent-which she did! That’s a lot of pressure. And if any of you out there have had an Arts parent, you know what kind of pressure I’m talking about! If you can sing, the parent is always trying to make you sing EVERYWHERE! Don’t you just love having to sing on the spot to a random stranger that happens to be a friend of your parent at the grocery store. Then you have all of these eyes looking at you because you don’t know how to sing quietly. It’s a whole mess. Lo and behold, Jeniffer’s mom made her sing! Ha! She sounded beautiful but still! What did I tell you! Needless to say, she blew us away and the rest is history!
Comfort Cookies Was Born
Years later, Comfort Cookies was born! When I found out that Jeniffer had a business, making cookies no doubt, I had to try them! I’m so glad I did because those cookies were amazing and I’m not even kidding! If I had to guess, Jeniffer probably sings into the cookie dough, infusing the chocolate chip morsels with some kind of alchemy, wiccan, Hogwarts spell magic that makes you keep eating them! Don’t even think about warming them up because then you won’t have any cookies left! I’m neither denying nor confirming that I ate the whole bag! When I asked Jeniffer what made her want to create a business, this is what she said-
“I’ve always loved to bake! I wanted to start a company that I could see myself doing FOREVER! Something that would make me happy and make others happy, and so…COOKIES! Plus people have been telling me FOR YEARS to sell my cookies!”
For years huh?…You’ve been keeping these cookies from me for YEARS?! That’s probably for the best! I think I may have a problem.
Order These Cookies
I strongly suggest that you try Comfort Cookies! They are so rich and chocolatey and gooey and delicious. I had the chocolate chunk cookies but she makes much more. Snickerdoodles, black and white cookies (Milk Chocolate and White Chocolate), and more! Please try them out! You really won’t be disappointed!
